The Countryfisher

Showing Magnar a summer fishing spot.

Sveg DamDuring the summer season it seems like most of the fishermen here are just outright gone.It is almost as if winter fishing is the only kind of fishing that anyone is interested in. In reality this is not true. During the winter months the anglers seem to team up on the ice, so where you see one angler, there are surely lots more near by. Summer fishing is differen. During the summer months the anglers seem to spread out everywhere, so when you see one, there is very unlikely to be more than two others there, if any others at all. Summer fishing is also quite different than ice fishing. for some reson there seems to be many more summer fishing spots than winter fishing spots. I doubt that the reason is that fish cuddle up to keep warm. It is rather the fact that the anglers doo.

The years first Trolling trip on Ljusnan
Written by Matthew G. Hauge
Sunday, 20 April 2008

Magnar is enjoying the nice day. When the ponds and lakes are shut between seasons, we usually go trolling for Pike on the Ljusnan River. After Ljusnan was regulated with dams, the water flow has turned much slower, making the river a paradise for perch, and pike fishing. Pike can be caught all year around, but we usually only fish for pike in May, and October. When Magnar called me, asking if I wanted to be with him over to Erik, to go fishing, I naturally said yes right away. I got my good pike wobblers out, as well as a few smaller wobblers that I thought might catch some trout later in the season. My intent with these now would be to catch a perch or two.

Spring Blocked roads and beautiful weather.

Henrik is really enjoying the nice spring weather. Henrik and I have been dying to go to Vargknattjärn all all winter. The little forest pond har crystal clear water. A beautiful sand bottom, and some really nice Arctic Char, and Brown trout. The Trout are silvery of color with big black spots, and the Arctic Char are also very siverish in their color, to the content that they look like the saltwater version of the fish. Naturally Göte wants to join us too, so we agree to pick him up after Henrik has been over to my place.

A sunny evening on Stråsjön
Written by Matthew G. Hauge
Wednesday, 16 April 2008

Magnar is startig to get to grips with Ice Fishing. As summer is growing closer, we are getting more and more desperate to go fishing. The days are getting warmer, and  the snow is melting. The days are getting longer as well, long enough for us to go fishing in the afternoons. A few of us want to try the spring fishing on Stråsjön. Partly so we can present ice fishing to newbies like Magnar, and a Danish friend, Allan, and  my Finnish friend, Mirko, but also just because we are dying to go fishing.

It is weird how the spring gets the fishing fever to rise.

Illustration 01The years last ice fishing competition was held not too far from where I live, on a lake called Bodsjön. The skies where gray this day, but there was no rain or snow, and the temperature was about -2 so it was not cold at all.
Magnar was with us, and when getting to the lake we meet Rolfsson.

Testing my New rod
Written by Matthew G. Hauge
Saturday, 12 April 2008

By the river, getting the gear together. My friend Henrik had been working in Denmark most of the winter. He and a bunch of his friends had used this opportunity to purchase some fishing equipment for the summer season's fishing. Among some gear for bait fishing I had also purchased a new rod for spin fishing. A Berkley series one 10', 7-12g spinning rod. I was eager to try my new rod, and also eager to show Magnar some of the summer fishing spots in the area, so we decided to try the spring fishing by the dam above Sveg. The water here is always free of ice due to the strong current, but the water being very cold, we didn't expect to catch much.
